Linear Chandeliers
Linear Chandelier For illuminated spaces that are longer than they are wide, a linear chandelier may be the answer. A modern linear chandelier has all the attributes of a standard chandelier and includes an additional feature. The light fixtures are evenly spread front to back as opposed to surrounding the center. Despite rectangular spaces in homes and buildings being around for many thousands of years, the modern or rustic linear chandelier is a relatively recent phenomenon. Understanding why linear lighting exists, its benefits, and how it may fit into your home will help you make the best-informed decision about whether a linear chandelier dining room, living room, or entranceway is right for you.
Read MoreWhat is Linear Lighting? The simple definition is that linear lighting seeks to distribute light more towards the ends rather than from the center. If you’ve seen fluorescent light tubes, then you can picture what linear lighting means. Despite so many spaces in homes, businesses, and facilities that can benefit from this type of lighting, it didn’t really emerge in a real way until the 1950s. The reasons were simple enough as traditional incandescent lighting used the round or bulb form of lights that could not be shaped like fluorescent tubes. The result was a highly inefficient means of lighting rectangular rooms where either a few large or rows of smaller incandescent bulbs were used. The result was not only unsightly, but it sapped a considerable amount of energy. This is because incandescent bulbs used most of their electricity to generate heat, not light.
That all changed in the 1950s with the emergence of fluorescent tubes. Fluorescent tubes are far more energy efficient and their long shape was perfectly suited to rectangular spaces. However, fluorescent tubes are mostly limited to office and industrial use because of the unnatural blueish light that they generate. Incandescent bulbs, while wasting far more energy, have a warm, natural glow better suited to the home. The development of LED lighting at the turn of the 21st century changed everything as linear lighting moved beyond fluorescents. LEDs used less energy but had the same warm glow of incandescent bulbs which made them the perfect choice for the linear chandelier.
